MS News . . .

Let's get ready to walk in 2011!

This is a great way to bring family, friends, and co-workers together to boost our community spirit and involvement.  We will also collect packages of new socks for the local Women & Children's Shelter (walking = socks).  To join Team CaroJay or to make donations, click MS Society.  Let's walk for those who can't!  Contact CaroJays if you need assistance at (864) 525-5622 or jeasler@carojays.org.

Walking 2Thank you for your help and your support!

The 2010 MS Walk for Greenville was held on Saturday, May 1st at the ICAR Campus.  With regret, Team CaroJay was unable to participate in this year's MS Walk with various events taking place.  It is our hope to again formulate a team next year to help fund the research and wonderful programs that the MS Society provides.

The 2009 MS Walk brought our friends and families together for another fun year!  YES, there was the threat of rain.  YES, there was the wind.  YES, it was held at a new location - the ICAR campus.  BUT, we had a great time and it was for a great cause - to "stomp out" MS!  We were fortunate to raise $431 for MS along with 8 packages of new socks to donate to Shepherd's Gate Women and Children's Shelter (walking=socks).  Thank you everyone for another successful year!

The 2008 MS Walk was a SPIRITED time!  We walked 4.5 miles beginning at County Square, through Cleveland Park, around Greenville Zoo, UP Washington Street, through downtown, and ended at the new Drive Baseball Stadium for the ballgame following the MS Walk.  All persons raising $50+ received a free ticket.  Golden Coral provided the lunch of grilled hotdogs which only complimented the beautiful weather!  Our total donations for this year's MS Walk is $446.48.  This was our best year yet in rasing money for MS - it was an amazing day!

The 2007 MS Walk was GREAT – great weather, great people, great food!  On May 19th, Team CaroJay walked the 2-mile route at Barnet Park in Spartanburg.  The early morning was a little chilly but soon warmed up so we could remove our sweatshirts and jackets.  Registration began at 9:00, the MS Walk started at 10:00, and a delicious grilled hotdog lunch provided by Golden Coral followed.

The 2006 MS Walk was held at Furman University on March 25th!  Wonderful people came out for the 5-mile walk around Furman Lake.  Although the attempt was there, Team CaroJay did not do as well this year with donations – we were not able to match or exceed 2005.  The goal for 2007 is to double the 2005 donations – $600!  Sooooo, join our team and let's get walking!

The 2005 MS Walk was held at Furman University on April 9th.  The 5-mile route was twice around their beautiful lake.  The weather was a wonderful sunny (but cool) day that only complimented the scenery of the bell tower, swans, geese, ducks, and Paris Mountain in the distance, and we can't go without mentioning the 4-5 foot long catfish that we spotted on the upper end of the lake.  There were 11 of us walking, and we raised just over $300.  Our 2005 MS Walk was a huge success, and now let's get ready for 2006 MS Walk!

In Search of the Monarchs

Clemson Botanical Gardens

(9-25-09)  Oh, the threat of rain!  We had postponed our Butterfly Field Trip from the week before due to rain (butterflies don't fly in the rain).  But, after watching weather radar hour by hour to see the sun shining in Clemson, it’s a GO!  To complete our study of the butterfly’s life cycle, it’s time for our "search for butterflies" as they migrate south to Mexico from as far north as Canada.  It has been mapped that butterflies migrate down through the Blue Ridge Mountains and through the Upstate of South Carolina.

We made the school pick-up; we enjoyed our snack; we’re on our way to Clemson’s Botanical Gardens.  As it was our first time there for our Butterfly Field Trip, we were very excited upon arriving to see all the butterfly plants around the visitors’ center and YES – butterflies!  They were flying about in their calm peacefulness as only butterflies know how to do exhibiting all their beauty.

While we were there, we also walked the trails to explore the area.  What wonderful sights along the way - the plants, the animals, and an amphitheater!  We quite enjoyed our time and will plan to return again.  Hence, another year – another day, in search of the Monarchs!

"Just living is not enough," said the butterfly.

"One must have sunshine, freedom,

and a little flower."

All Aboard for

   George the Train!

We are so fortunate to have local activities like this to keep us learning about our community.  George the Train is located at The Pavilion and has a story to tell:  The train ran at McPherson Park in downtown Greenville in the 1950s, but the park closed in the 1960s and so did the train.

In 2001, George returned to delight a new generation of fans.  With some hussle - bussles, we caught the last ride of the day.
